Cayman Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors

Current President

Tatiana Brown

Formation

The association was founded on June 17, 1988 after an introductory contact made by the Caribbean Association of Life Underwriters (CALU) now the Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA) in 1985.
The formation of the Association’s teething problems came in the form of dues. Prior to the founding of the Association dues were paid to the Life Underwriters Association of Jamaica (LUAJ) and members who had already paid those dues felt that the dues to the new association should have been deferred until the expiration of the Jamaican dues. That resulted in 37 paid up members.

Founding Members

The founding members of the Association include:
  • Lloyd Christie
  • Edward ‘Eddie’ Balderamos – joined 40 years ago and 24 years with CARAIFA
  • Harvey Stephenson

Education

The Association participated in CALU/CARAIFA’s education courses. 1987 saw 7 persons registering for LUATC with 6 passing. In 1998, a single registration resulted in a single pass.

Community Projects

For several years the Association supported the Cayman Islands Volunteer Blood Donor Service. In 1999 the Association sent
  • 1000lbs rice
  • 500 lbs beans
  • 130 lbs salt
to Bay Islands in Honduras, after Hurricane Mitch.
LUACy presented a cheque to the Caymanian Kidney Foundation on June 28, 2007, for CI$500.00.

Name Change

LUACy has been working extremely hard with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority to effect its name change to the Cayman Islands Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. A formal application was submitted on February 26 to the authorities. That is still a work in progress.
In 2014, the name was changed to Cayman Islands Association of Financial Advisors (CIAFA)

CARAIFA Sales Congress

The Association declined the hosting of Congress 2002. Congress 2010 suffered a similar fate.

Membership

During the 2008 Administration the membership grew to a record number of 60. That figure represented a percentage growth of 80 +.
Membership in 2014 was 25.

Awards

The Association’s first annual awards ceremony was held on March 18, 2008. That event recognized such stalwarts as: Lloyd Christie, Roy Charlton. Edward ‘Eddie’ Balderamos, Spencer Marshall, Harvey Stephenson and Derek Bogle.

CARAIFA Meetings

Mr. Edward Balderamos has, for many years, been the Association’s sole representative to the CALU/CARAIFA’s meetings. The President and/or other members of the Executive have represented the Association in recent times.
