Gladstone K. Pottinger began his working career as a Field Bookkeeper on St. Mary’s largest sugar cane and banana plantation. Within three (3) short years he was promoted to the position of Section Manager with full responsibilities to plan and implement programmes to achieve the Company’s objectives. Three (3) years later he was promoted to the position of Senior Section Manager and later to Deputy Field Superintendent.

He left the Field of Agriculture to join the Life Insurance Industry in 1966 as a full time career Life Insurance Executive.

Having spent (30) years of service in the life Insurance Industry as a Salesman, Training Officer, Company Training Director and asst. Vice President of Marketing at Life of Jamaica, Mr. Pottinger resigned in 1990 and established his own career training and development service where he developed several different training courses for salesmen, administrative staff in the Banking and Financial Services and some management programmes

During the period he was successful in all twelve subjects leading up to the Chartered Life Underwriters Designation (CLU) conferred by the University of Toronto in Association with the Life Underwriters Association of Canada.

His service in the Credit Union Movement spanned twenty three years as Founder, Treasurer/Manager, and General Manager of the Insurance Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited. He earned the distinction of leading the I.E.C.C.U to become the first Credit Union in Jamaica to obtain a level 1 rating using the P.E.A.R.S rating formula to assess performance.

He holds several different training certificates from Hartford school in Agency Management, Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association (L.I.M.R.A), LIMRA’s Field Officer’s School; Training Directors seminars and LIMRA’s Workshops Curriculum Designs.

He also holds Management Training Certificates from Life Officers Management Centre (LOMA), Agency Management Training Council (AMTC) and many other training institutions. He was the first Caribbean person appointed moderator of the Agency Management Training Course.

He participated in many local and overseas courses and has attended numerous International Forums on Adults Educational and Developmental needs and was Jamaica’s Executive on the International Network of Life Insurance and Financial Services Educators (Inlife) with headquarters situated in The American College: USA

Mr. Pottinger has been very active in his community and church-He is:

  1. Founding Director and Former Secretary General of the Caribbean Association of Life Underwriters for thirteen years.
  2. Founder, Treasurer/Manager and General Manager of the Insurance employees Cooperative Credit Union Limited.
  3. Treasurer and Director of the Life Underwriters Association of Jamaica (LUAJ) for eight years and was President of that august body, the LUAJ in 1979/80.
  4. Founding member and former Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters.
  5. Former Vice-President of the Life Insurance Managers and General Agents Association (LIMGAA) 1989/90 and 1990/91.
  6. Former Local Chairman of the Agency Management Training Council for five (5) years and AMTC moderator for four years.
  7. Elder in the Webster memorial church.
  8. First Executive Chairman of the Webster Memorial Church Social Service Ministry where he served for ten (10) years.
  9. Member of the Meadowbrook High School Board of Governors.
  10. Founding Chairman of the Constant Spring grove Citizens Association

Mr. Pottinger has received several accolades from the various organizations in which he has served. In 1967 he earned the distinguished Salesman Award from Sales Marketing Executive. In 1979 he was made the Life Underwriters Association of Jamaica “Industry Man of the year and in 1994 he was made a Life Member of that Association.

In 1995 he was made honorary member of the Life Insurance Managers and General Agents Association and in 2002 he was honoured with a citation from the Insurance Employee’s Cooperative Credit Union Limited documenting his valuable contributions to the birth and development of the Insurance Employee’s Cooperative Credit Union Ltd.

Mr. Pottinger married Hermine Violet –Nee Willock in 1957 and the union produced three children-Marlon, Audrey and Arlene and Four Grandchildren.
